Course Materials

The course content is the only text required for this course, but I strongly recommend a copy of The Rules of Golf, the United States Golf Association’s official rule book.

Other Materials

  • If you don't have a copy of the Rules of Golf, you may access the rules on USGA's website at www.usga.org.

  • You'll need golf clubs, balls, tees, possibly a golf glove, and other golfing equipment necessary to play the game.

  • You'll need access to a golf course where you can play and practice.

  • This course is designed for right-handed players, so left-handed players should read the material with opposites in mind. Left-handed players are encouraged to seek other sources, including websites and personal instructors.

  • This course contains several video files that will help you understand the material and learn to be a better golfer. You need internet access in order to watch them.

Assignments

The units in this course are designed to teach you several necessary golf skills without an instructor or a huge tell-all book. The material is presented in an order that will help you learn the rules, etiquette, and skills of golf quickly and thoroughly.

Each unit requires that you take a quiz at the end of it. Some units also require skills assessments. You will also take a written final exam after you’ve completed the entire course. Additionally, you will be required to turn in a portfolio, which is a graded summary of your results on skills tests and proof that you’ve applied your newly acquired knowledge while playing rounds of golf.

Self Checks

The self check questions in this section of the Units are not graded. They are merely to gauge your understanding of the unit before you take the unit quiz to conclude each chapter. If you understand all of the questions and concepts from this section, you are probably well prepared for your quizzes.

Quizzes

There are five quizzes that amount to 25 percent of your grade. Question types may include multiple choice, matching, fill in the blank, short answer, or multiple answer questions.

Portfolio Assignment

Your portfolio consists of two parts: the three included Skills Assessment Results Sheets and your official scorecards with your signature and date you played from as many as five nine-hole rounds of golf. The Scorecard Section and Skills Assessment Section of your portfolio grade are weighted equally.

  • You are required to do all of the Skills Assessments Results Sheets correctly and play at least five nine-hole rounds of golf in order to get all of the points for this section.

  • In order to get 90 percent on the portfolio, you must do all of the Skills Assessments Results Sheets correctly and play four nine-hole rounds of golf.

  • In order to get 80 percent on the portfolio, you must do all of the Skills Assessments Results Sheets correctly and play three nine-hole rounds of golf.

  • If you play fewer than three nine-hole rounds of golf, the highest score you can get on the portfolio is 50 percent.

  • If you do not complete and turn in all of the Skills Assessments Results Sheets, the highest score you can get on the portfolio is 50 percent.

Remember: Do not submit any assignment until you have completed all of the assignments for the portfolio!

Final Exam

The final exam is comprehensive and covers all material in the course. Questions on the exam will be similar to questions from the self check and unit quizzes.

Grading

Your grade in this course will be based on these assignments and exams:

Assignment Weight
Quizzes 25% (5% each)
Portfolio 25%
Final Exam 50%

* You must pass the final exam with at least a 60% to earn credit for the course.

Your letter grade is calculated according to these percentages.
