If you’re new to online courses, or if you just need a quick refresher, be sure to take a look at these video tutorials!
Prerequisite
There are no prerequisites for this course and you don’t need to learn anything new before you take this course. You just need to (1) have a positive attitude, (2) study hard, and (3) complete all of the course activities.
Course Learning Outcomes
In assessing the state and national standards for public speaking courses, it has been decided that this course will focus on helping you master the following:
Describe both classical and contemporary theories about persuasion and public speaking.
Speak in an organized and effective manner.
Prepare a complete speech outline with supporting material.
Speak in a smooth and effective manner while emphasizing the important ideas you are trying to communicate.
Analyze other public speeches and identify rhetorical and speaking devices used in the speeches.
Course Materials
You will need the following to successfully complete this course:
A video recording device (a smartphone, a computer, or a video camera)
An audio recording device (a smartphone or an mp3 voice recorder)
Audience members (family or friends) who can evaluate your performance
Assignments
Requirements
Throughout each module in the course, there are various computer-graded interactives. These practice interactives do not count toward your grade. They are designed to prepare you for the end-of-module quizzes, the unit quizzes, feedback assignments, and for the final exam.
There are 15 instructional modules in this course. Module 16 is the final exam module.
Throughout the course you will complete and submit assignments. You will submit assignments on their due dates.
Knowledge, Skill, and Attribute
Knowledge: Communications: Public Speaking
In this course, knowledge refers to the subject matter and content you will learn while taking the course. You will be learning about and preparing to give a speech.
Skill: Deliver Presentations
Employers and colleges expect high school graduates to have twenty-first-century skills. These skills include communication, critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. In this course, you will become better in one of these areas. You can earn a micro-credential to share on a resume or in a college application essay. The micro-credential is proof you have gained the skill.
Attribute: Kindness
An attribute is a quality, characteristic, or trait. You can develop attributes to make yourself a better person. Attributes can include things like respect, gratitude, and kindness. In this course, you will learn more about the attribute of kindness. This will be a great way to develop into an even more amazing person than you already are.
Note-Taking Guide
This course includes Note-Taking Guides that will be graded by the instructor. The Note-Taking Guide is provided for you as a downloadable Word doc or fillable PDF. These activities will allow you to customize your learning and responses. You will submit these activities using the file upload function at the end of modules 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15.
Module Quizzes and Midcourse Quiz
You will complete computer-graded quizzes throughout the course and a Midcourse Quiz that will assess your understanding of the concepts in the first half of the course.
Speeches
Since this is a Public Speaking course, there are two required speeches:
Personal Introduction Speech Submission *Skill* (Mod 3)
Persuasive Speech Submission *Skill* (Mod 14)
These assignments require you to submit an audio or visual file of yourself practicing different kinds of public speaking. For these assignments, these audio/video files will be the only acceptable files for submission:
WAV
MOV
WMF
MP3
MP4
Links to online websites where you have uploaded your presentation
If you submit your recording in another format, it will not be accepted. Likewise, any other forms of recordings will not be reviewed and you will be asked to re-submit your assignment.

Worksheets and other documents you upload for each assignment must be in one of the following formats:

Any other format will result in a 0 grade for the assignment.
Audio/Video Files for Assignments
Some assignments require you to submit an audio or visual file of yourself practicing different kinds of public speaking. For these assignments, the following audio/video files will be the only acceptable files for submission:

Exams
Final Exam
The final exam consists of 50 multiple-choice and matching questions. Students must pass the final exam to earn credit for the course; they may retake it once, for a fee, upon request.
Grading
Your grade in this course will be based on these assignments and exams:
* You must pass the final exam with at least a 60% to earn credit for the course.

Your letter grade is calculated according to these percentages.
A | 93% - 100% |
A- | 90% - 92% |
B+ | 87% – 89% |

C- | 70% - 72% | D+ | 67% - 69% |
D | 63% - 66% |
D- | 60% - 62% |
F (fail) | 0% - 59% |
