Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successfully completing this course, you should be able to do the following:

  1. Define obscure words, without looking in a dictionary, by main ideas, context clues, synonyms and antonyms, and prefixes and suffixes.

  2. Improve reading speed and comprehension through consistent timed readings and cloze exercises. In cloze exercises, words have been deleted, and you need to select appropriate words to fit in the corresponding blank.

  3. Learn to make connections with yourself, the world, and other books and stories.

  4. Apply the qualities of a good reader in your life.

Self Checks

Most of the lessons in this course are followed by a self check quiz. These computer-graded quizzes do not count toward your grade.

Unit Quizzes

Each of the 8 units ends with a unit quiz. These computer-graded quizzes do count toward your grade and are one of the best tools to prepare for the final exam.

Exams

You will complete one final exam for this course. The final exam consists of 45 multiple-choice questions. See the Exam Preparation page for details.

Your grade in this course will be based on these assignments and exams:

* You must pass the final exam with at least a 60% to earn credit for the course.

D 63% - 66%
D- 60% - 62%
F (fail) 0% - 59%
